Amazon Soon Opening DRM-free MP3 Store?

I think I should setup a rumours category on this blog. :-) Rumours are circulating that the giant online retailer Amazon is trying to open a music store that will sell mp3′s of your favourite bands, without any restrictive copy protection. That means, on the one hand, it wouldn’t matter if you owned an iPod or a Zune, you can buy from Amazon.

It also means that you would be able to move your downloaded music from your old player to your new one if you change your mind, which you cannot do if you buy from iTunes.
So the question is: Is Amazon big enough to take significant market share away from Apple & friends? If the DRM-free ideal comes true, I think we may have something to look forward to in 2007…
